Nữ sinh gốc Việt nhận học bổng tiến sĩ Harvard

Alexandria Huỳnh, 17 tuổi, vừa được đại học danh tiếng Harvard trao học bổng toàn phần để làm tiến sĩ về miễn dịch học.

Trường Y của Harvard trao cho Huỳnh học bổng toàn phần cộng thêm cả tiền lương. Ngoài ra, cô còn được hai trường đại học hàng đầu khác ở Mỹ là Yale và đại học Pensylvania đề nghị nhận học bổng.

"Tôi không thể tin đấy là sự thật. Tôi cảm thấy lâng lâng trong vài ngày liền, cảm giác không có gì diễn tả nổi", Huỳnh chia sẻ với VOA. "Tôi biết đấy là giấc mơ của nhiều bạn trẻ, thế nên, tôi cảm thấy thực sự may mắn vì có được cơ hội tới Harvard học".

Huỳnh, sống ở thành phố Torrance bang California, tâm sự cô thích nghiên cứu về lĩnh vực miễn dịch vì ngành này có vai trò quan trọng trong chữa trị các loại bệnh. "Tôi nghĩ rằng nếu chúng ta có thể tìm ra một giải pháp kiểm soát hệ thống miễn dịch, giúp mọi người chống chọi được với bệnh tật, thì điều đó sẽ giúp cho cuộc sống của nhiều người tốt hơn", Huynh nói.

Ở tuổi 13, cô học bậc cử nhân theo một chương trình học sớm trước tuổi tại Đại học Los Angeles ở bang California và tốt nghiệp với tấm bằng hạng ưu về sinh học. Theo trang tin của trường, Huỳnh còn là thành viên của Hội danh dự chìa khóa vàng và Hội danh dự Phi Kappa Phi tại Đại học Los Angeles. Huỳnh đã lĩnh học bổng sinh viên tốt nghiệp xuất sắc nhất của Phi Kappa Phi và học bổng sinh viên tốt nghiệp chương trình nhập học sớm (EEP) giỏi nhất trong năm.

Ngoài việc học hành, Huỳnh còn tham gia công tác tình nguyện tại trung tâm y tế Torrance Memorial Medical Center. Cô cũng thích chơi dương cầm và trượt băng nghệ thuật khi có thời gian.

Cal State L.A.’s youngest graduate, 17,
heads to Harvard for Ph.D. in immunology

While most others her age are finishing high school, 17-year-old Alexandria Huynh—the youngest graduating senior in the Class of 2010 at Cal State L.A.—is heading to Harvard University this fall to pursue a Ph.D. in immunology. Admitted to Harvard Medical School with full funding and an additional stipend, she was also accepted to doctoral programs at Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania.  Through the University’s Early Entrance Program (EEP), Huynh was admitted to Cal State L.A. at the age of 13. Huynh, who will receive her bachelor’s degree in biology with honors, will be marching at Cal State L.A.’s Commencement 8 a.m. ceremony Saturday, June 12. She hopes to pursue a career in biomedical research with clinical applications.

Recognizing Porter for her dedication, Huynh said, “She puts in an almost ridiculous amount of time in mentoring students, both in classes and in the lab. She provided solid support and guidance as a research mentor, and helped me learn how to be more critical of myself and my work.”

A Torrance resident, Huynh was also a member of the Golden Key Honor Society and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society at Cal State L.A. Recipient of the Kinecta Federal Credit Union Scholarship, she was recently named the winner of Cal State L.A.’s Phi Kappa Phi Outstanding Senior Award and presented the Early Entrance Program Graduate of the Year scholarship. In addition, she has volunteered at the Torrance Memorial Medical Center. When time allows, she also enjoys figure skating and playing the piano.

Huynh said, “EEP provided a strong infrastructure and support system for us. We were able to talk to older students who had been through the same experiences as we were going through, as well as alumni with different perspectives.”

Cal State L.A.’s EEP admits extraordinarily gifted youngsters—some as young as 11—directly into college, providing the early entrants with monitored evaluation, regular counseling sessions, and the opportunity to study with like-minded peers. Huynh is among more than 20 other EEP graduates receiving their baccalaureate degrees this year.
